Surrounded by Saxon citadels

Romania and its Transylvania region are known for their hospitality, brightly coloured villages and, of course, impressive network of citadels – Siebenbürgens – built in the 17th century by German-speaking populations to protect against invasion. Your route  will include four of them. Sibiu, the European cultural capital in 2007, is the the richest and most spacious. That of Braşov features the narrowest public road in Eastern Europe, the popular rue de la Ficelle – just over 1 meter wide. With its nine towers, that of Sighișoara is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved of the continent’s medieval towns, whose magical ambiance is reminiscent of the historic districts of Prague or Vienna. Sighișoara also features the family home of the illustrious Vlad Țepeș (alias Dracula) – now a  restaurant. Feel like stopping in for a glass of red wine?
