On the cliffside

In Italy and its boot-shaped geography, the Riviera, which runs along the Mediterranean in the north of the country, is the equivalent of the knee. On this sunny itinerary, you can choose to ride along the seafront, mainly between Diano Marina and Viareggio, or climb in the more demanding hinterland.

Along the way, you'll pass through Genoa, birthplace of explorer Christopher Columbus, and visit Cinque Terre and its spectacular villages perched on sheer cliffs, whose multicolored beauty has earned them a place on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The last third of your journey will take a more cultural turn, as you leave the shore and pedal east towards Pisa and Florence. Here's a most charming Italy, for which you may well genuflect in admiration!
