Planning your trip

Planning your trip - Vélo Québec Voyages

You've decided to take a bicycle tour with Vélo Québec Voyages! The first step, if you haven't already done so, is to choose your destination. Are you partial to France? We have many itineraries to suggest. If you'd rather stay in Canada, no problem - we've got plenty to keep you pedaling!

Choose your destination

Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just a cycling enthusiast, we've got vacations to suit your tastes, interests, budget and level of effort. For us, route selection should be based on three main criteria:

  • The destination: the most important thing is to choose a destination you want to explore! Cycling is about the road and the effort, of course, but it's also about discovering landscapes and heritage every kilometer of the way, as well as the culinary delights that await you at the end of each day. Make sure you choose a destination whose culture, history, gastronomy and climate appeal to you!
  •

  • The difficulty of the itinerary: cycling trips are accessible to everyone, but it's important to choose a trip whose difficulty suits both your desires and your abilities. If you're just starting out on your cycling career, it's probably better to discover this way of travelling on a pleasant, rolling route than to tackle the Alps as the curtain rises!
  •

  • Your travel objective: for some cyclotourists, the goal is to rack up the kilometers and reproduce a cycling experience that resembles the professional grand tours. For others, the objective is more epicurean, and revolves around the discovery of a region, or even a country, traveling on a human scale on a daily basis, taking the time to stop and enjoy when the mood strikes. That's why we offer a range of packages to suit you and your group. Free days, optional itineraries, extending your stay... it's all possible!

As a result, each of our trips includes a ranking from 1 to 6, denoting the difficulty of the tour on a daily basis, enabling you to prepare well for the hardest days, or even avoid them. Weather conditions (sun, rain, wind direction, temperature) and altitude can also influence the degree of effort required on a given day. To help you choose the tour that's right for you, consult our advisors!

1   easy, flat circuit: few difficulties; from 30 to 60km.
2   fairly easy circuit: includes a few valleys; from 40 to 70km.
3   medium-difficulty circuit: hilly, sometimes mountainous; from 50 to 80km.
4   fairly difficult circuit: hilly and mountainous, with relatively steep gradients; from 50 to 90km.
5   difficult circuit: very hilly and mountainous, requiring considerable and repeated effort; from 60 to 110km.
6 very difficult circuit: requiring constant effort, repeated climbs (cols) and a high level of training; from 70 to 165km.

Prepare to leave

Once you've chosen and purchased your trip, it's time to plan! You'll receive GPX files of the route by e-mail, so you can review each day's cycling to identify major difficulties, possible stopping points, bike stores and other places of interest along the way.

With the route in hand, you can also identify the cultural, historical and natural places of interest you want to visit. This will enable you to choose which days to cycle and which days to rest, where possible. For tourists with multiple interests, we offer tours structured around stopover towns that allow you to take rest days as needed, the only compulsory cycling days being those linking two stopover towns.

If you use your own bike and have to fly, be sure to check out our page on boxing a bike.

In any case, make sure you have everything you need to guarantee your autonomy on the road: a mechanics' kit, a few patches, energy bars, clothing suited to the climate of your trip. Identify any items or products that may be hard to find at your destination. For example, your favorite energy bars or gels, or the pain-relieving cream of your choice for those days when your legs are heavy from the night before!
