Level
3 - Moderate - hilly, sometimes mountainous - 50 to 80 km
Your journey begins on the west coast in the tranquil Alentejo, nicknamed "the bread basket" for its many golden fields. You then head south through the vast South-West Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, passing through Vila Nova de Milfontes and its popular beach. The typical Algarve village of Aljezur, with its white houses and discreet lanes, welcomes you to the Algarve.
From here, you descend to the surfing town of Sagres and the 200 m-high cliffs of Cape St. Vincent. On the south coast, you enter the liveliest part of the Algarve, of which Portimão and one of Portugal's most famous beaches, Praia da Rocha, are worthy representatives. Round off this sunny holiday in the Vale do Guadiana nature park, then head for São Domingos and its majestic old open-cast mine. You'll understand why this coast is so popular!
